Nokia Siemens to Launch Next-Generation Full Packet Microwave Solution

Nokia Siemens Networks is unveiling a new full packet mobile backhaul system, called FlexiPacket Microwave, at the Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona.

The new solution is said to have the potential to change the dynamics of the radio world and offer innovative new ways for mobile operators to provide new multimedia data services to the customers.

The system combines Carrier Ethernet Transport with Microwave Radio using a data centric approach while eliminating the need for a base station shelter. Nokia (News - Alert) Siemens says that this new approach will allow operators to offer attractive pricing models for data intensive applications and to provide the quality of service necessary to drive mass market, reliable services.

"FlexiPacket Microwave is more than Ethernet over microwave. It addresses the whole chain in mobile networking: Radio, hub-site and network management, with carrier-grade quality of service," said Vesa Tykkylainen, head Nokia Siemens Networks' (News - Alert) Microwave Radio business.

Company officials explain that one of the major cost factors for an operator is managing the network and the new mobile backhaul system simplifies network management by having end-to-end connections set up in a point-and-click fashion. Adding that FlexiPacket Microwave Radio provides the complete set of Carrier Ethernet functionality by making use of a built-in Carrier Ethernet engine, and offers a capacity of up to 1 Gbit per second.

Network operators get holistic management capacities by letting them integrate network management system with other network and service management systems from Nokia Siemens Networks' wide portfolio.

The new solution offers cheap means to transfer vast amount of packet data while also making sure the lowest possible latency and synchronization. Operators by choosing this high density solution can avail themselves a cost effective future technology.

FlexiPacket Microwave is said to be a key element in Nokia Siemens Networks' Mobile Backhaul portfolio. In combination with Carrier Ethernet Transport, it fully satisfies the requirements that 2G, 3G, WiMax and LTE (News - Alert) impose to the backhaul network.

FlexiPacket Microwave will be displayed at the Mobile World Congress. The showcase will demonstrate a true Full Packet Mobile Backhaul based on a FlexiPacket Microwave integrated BTS solution and CET aggregation network.
