MIPS-Based Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Tablet Debuts in Indonesia

Indonesians are going to get their first Android 4.0 tablet, thanks to collaboration between MIPS Technologies (News - Alert), Inc., MLW Telecom and a MIPS licensee, Ingenic Semiconductor. The companies have reportedly come together to bring Ingenic's MIPS-Based Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich” tablet to the Indonesia market. The SpeedUp Pad Ice features broadband service from Telkom Indonesia and was launched this week at the Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona, Spain.

The SpeedUp Pad Ice will be available in a broad range of retail shops across Indonesia. Tradeshows across the country are also showcasing this Android (News - Alert) 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” Tablet, the companies announced in a press release.

The market for consumer mobile devices is growing rapidly in Indonesia. The market is flooded with affordable products. Attractively priced at US$33, SpeedUp Pad Ice is expected to perform well in the highly competitive Indonesian consumer market.

The promo-offer comes with a six-month contract of broadband services, which includes free hot spot connectivity at more than 3,000 locations in Indonesia.

The SpeedUp Pad Ice tablet is powered by Ingenic 1GHz XBurst processor core, which leverages a MIPS-Based XBurst CPU running at 1GHz. Its power-efficient architecture provides an extended battery life (less than 400mA when browsing). The tablet features a seven-inch capacitive multi-touch display, 8GB of storage space, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, USB 2.0, a microSD card reader (up to 32GB), and supports 3G via USB dongle/modem. The gaming enthusiasts will find the product interesting as Gameloft's cutting-edge video game Spider-Man: Total Mayhem comes preloaded with the devices.

“Just two months after the introduction of the world's first Android 4.0 tablet, we are pleased to bring that same MIPS-based tablet design from Ingenic to consumers in Indonesia. It was very easy to work with Ingenic Semiconductor and MIPS Technologies, resulting in extremely fast time-to-market for this tablet that offers great features bundled with broadband service at an affordable price point,” vice president of product and marketing at MLW Telecom Rahmad Widjaja Sakti commented in a statement.

According to Ingenic Semiconductor CEO, Qiang Liu the design of SpeedUp Pad Ice is ideal for emerging and rapidly growing markets. The feature-packed, attractively priced tablet will significantly contribute to the mass adoption of Android tablets across the world, Liu maintained.

Recently MIPS Technologies signed a partnership deal with Intrinsic-ID to provide advanced security for MIPS-based mobile devices. With security-centric applications such as media content protection, secure payment transactions and secure cloud storage, MIPS licensees and OEMs can enable their platforms through the collaboration, the company said in an earlier release.
