Google Music to Launch With Motorola Xoom?
The confirmation of the Motorola Xoom’s pricing wasn’t the only news to launch at Mobile World Congress this week. Motorola (News - Alert) Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha also slipped a little rumor that Google Music will launch simultaneously with the Xoom.
Google Music, a cloud-based music service, will bring “video services and music services” to the Xoom, as it was reported by The Guardian. Competing with Apple’s iTunes, Google Music is part of an upgrade to the Android (News - Alert) OS and has been expected to launch for some time. According to Jha, the service will use Honeycomb, the latest Android OS specifically geared for tablets.
"If you look at Google (News - Alert) Mobile services [via Android] today, there's a video service, there's a music service – that is, there will be a music service," Jha said, according to the Guardian report.
Billboard magazine called the service the music industry’s worst-kept secret, and that sources have said that Andy Rubin, Google’s vice president of engineering, is the one who has been pitching the music labels about the new service.
Google has yet to comment on the news to confirm or deny the rumors.
If Jha’s thoughts on the matter are indeed true, we might actually witness Google finally launching a media service of their own.
