Patton Electronics Exec Discusses VoIP in Today's Shifting Economy (Part 1)

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Even with the explosion of unified communications and mobility, the VoIP market has seen some tough challenges over the last year. Organizations have tightened their belts as competition for customers in the telecom industry has intensified.

In an interview with TMCnet, Glendon Flowers, product marketing manager for Gaithersburg, Md.-based Patton (News - Alert) Electronics, said it’s important to focus on products that make life easier, faster and more productive for people. In the first of this two-part Q&A, Flowers spoke about what his company is doing to accomplish this goal, and remain a stable, driving force in this challenging economy.

The first part of the interview with Web editor Marisa Torrieri follows.

MT: Please tell me about the last nine months for Patton. How have things been going?
GF: At first the downturn didn’t really hit us that much, but we tightened our belt anyway and prepared for a tough year. Patton is highly diversified both in our extensive product portfolio and our market presence. Patton designs, develops and manufactures a catalog of over 1,000 products, engaging customers in 120 countries, with offices in USA, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, India, Vietnam and Lebanon. It all pays off. It’s a challenging time economically, but the demand for high quality technology manufactured in the USA remains high.

MT: What is the company doing right now in the VoIP market?
GF: We are in the middle of a massive thrust for VoIP gateways in the US market. We’re engaging our channel partners for a q4 marketing campaign focused on PRI gateways for SIP trunk solutions as well as analog FXS gateways for MTU/MDU solutions. Watch for special offers on SmartNode VoIP routers that will cause a market surge in the US VoIP market.

MT: Why has Patton remained a stable and driving force in the economy, when others have struggled?
GF: It’s the price performance equation. Patton gear is rock solid. At the same time we don’t overcharge. When we innovate a lower-cost manufacture, we pass the saving on. SmartNode stability and reliability is world-renowned, feature rich and affordable. Plus, our tech support is world-class and we don’t charge extra for it like the bigger more expensive vendors. That’s a huge value proposition for any customer whether you’re a business or a carrier or an Industrial CIO.

Stay tuned for the second part of our interview with Glendon Flowers, which will focus on VoIP trends, and the market outlook for 2010.
