Mobile Giving Foundations Passes $20 Million in Donations for Haiti Earthquake Relief

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

Mobile Giving Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping other non-profits raise funds through mobile, has reportedly raised donations via mobile phones for Haiti Earthquake Relief and said that it has surpassed $20 million across all the short codes managed by the organization.

After a widespread marketing on national broadcast outlets, mobile donations is said to have increased by $3.5 million, thereby raising the total amount from $16 million by MGF to more than $20 million. The Foundation also said that it continues to see donations coming in at an increasing pace.

Mobile Giving Foundation has been working to enable the “mobile channel” for charitable giving in support of good causes by using the convenience, security and ubiquity of text messaging and other wireless network based billing systems.

As a contributor towards Haiti Earthquake relief, the company said that by just texting a keyword to a designated short code via a mobile phone, a micro-donation of $5 or $10 can be made to aid the millions of people affected by this tragedy. All such donations go to the recipient charity, and the donation is said to appear as a charge on carrier bill.

As more organizations join the relief efforts in Haiti, additional short codes are also made available for making monetary donations to aid those affected by the recent earthquake, said the company official.

The Mobile Giving Foundation operates in the United States and Canada, and serves global charitable interests by providing the organizational element that enables charitable giving across wireless carrier platforms, by being responsible for compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations, by developing, managing and keeping standards for participation. It is serves by certifying non profit participation and giving campaigns, managing assigned short codes to be utilized by charities for mobile giving, acting as billing settlement and records clearinghouse between carriers and participating charities, issuing the donor receipt, conducting research on the demographics of mobile giving and optimizing mobile giving campaigns and by increasing awareness among the general public.
