Jamaica's Norman Manley International Airport Selects Nortel for Network Upgrades

By Barkha Bathwal, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Jamaica's Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) has selected Nortel (News - Alert) for network upgrades to enable new operating efficiencies between airport staff, airlines, customs and immigration groups, as well as to improve customer service for airport customers in the Airport Authority of Jamaica's drive to modernize the island's two international airports, including NMIA which serves the capital of Kingston.

Nortel's unified communications, which is based on Nortel's Ethernet Switches 8600 and 5520, is expected to increase productivity by as much as 18 percent and provide a return on investment of as much as 178 percent by enhancing processes for travelers, such as airline reservations and passport control, as well as utilize VOIP and video-on-demand to deliver multimedia content to flight information monitors and airport lounges through a highly secure and reliable network. Nortel's energy-efficient technology can help manage costs and reduce environmental impact, providing up to 20 times the performance and seven times the resiliency of competitive solutions while consuming up to 40 percent less energy and costing up to 50 percent less to own and operate by running operations from one centralized network, eliminating the costs of building and maintaining separate systems for data, video and voice.

"The network has become the most important piece of infrastructure we own, as every facet of our business is now connected including check-in and boarding systems, baggage management, immigration and passport control, CCTV, access control, building management, flight information systems and voice systems. With Nortel's technology supporting the newly implemented Common Use Passenger Processing Systems (CUPPS) and the soon to be implemented Common Use Self Service (CUSS) Check-in Kiosk, NMIA will provide one of the most sophisticated airport network solutions in use today. Nortel and Innovative Corporate Solutions Limited, which will serve as the local implementation and support partner for the NMIA project, are very strong players in the data network market - as evidenced by our awarding them this deal. We are already experiencing significant improvements in our network, and the expansion project are moving along at an excellent pace. ” Said Richard Gibbs, IT Projects development manager, NMIA.

Nortel is recognized in delivering communications capabilities that make the promise of Business Made Simple a reality for customers around 150 countries in the world, with the next-generation technologies, for both service provider and enterprise networks, which support multimedia and business-critical applications. Nortel's technologies are designed to help eliminate today's barriers to efficiency, speed and performance by simplifying networks and connecting people to the information they need, when they need it. www.nortel.com. www.nortel.com/news.

"Nortel's Ethernet Routing Switch portfolio provides the building blocks for creating a data information infrastructure that supports the requirements of NMIA, while protecting its network integrity and privacy. Nortel's unified communications portfolio is the most comprehensive on the market with an end to end solution that includes multimedia applications, voice, video and a complete data and security infrastructure.” said Michael Calzada, data business/channel development lead, Caribbean and Latin America, Nortel.

The Tolly Group Report Number 208298, July 2008, reported the results of a power consumption evaluation of six Nortel converged data network products consisting of large and medium core and wiring closet Ethernet Routing Switches (ERS), enterprise branch office routers, and IP phones compared to similar Cisco (News - Alert) products on the basis of power consumption and heat dissipation, and five-year operational cost. "Cisco Energy Tax" refers to up to 40 percent energy consumption savings when using these Nortel products instead of comparable Cisco products. Nortel has introduced an educational program for IT professionals and students with to foster a broader understanding of unified communications. The new program has the certification self-study guide titled “Unified Communications (News - Alert) Solutions: A practical business and technology approach” from Nortel Press. Nortel is discontinuing its WiMAX (News - Alert) offering, which was supplied by Israeli company Alvarion. The company says these moves will allow it to focus more effectively while better positioning itself in other areas where it is stronger. Nortel discontinues Wimax offerings.
