IP-based Surveillance Makes a Comeback: Report

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Until recently, the extensive sales cycles in 2009 -- together with the economic instability and the resulting budget freeze -- reduced quick migration from analog to IP-based surveillance.

A major share of the shipment still belongs to analogue cameras since the IP manufacturers are unable to enter the market due to the lack of competency and drive from the traditional distribution channel.

According to the latest analysis from Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert), European Video Surveillance Cameras Market, the market are able to achieve revenues of $765.0 million in 2009 and expects to achieve $954.9 million by 2015. In this study, the market sectors are classified according to the product type, geographical regions, application and industries.

Today, market gives more preference to IP-based surveillance over analogue cameras since customers have recognized the benefits offered by high-quality security and surveillance in order to prevent crime, vandalism and ensure the cost-efficient use of guards. Also, it offers improved image quality, detail offered by megapixel and high-definition cameras and its use of the existing IP infrastructure.

'Video surveillance solutions are becoming a norm in most security installations," said Archana Rao, Senior Research Analyst of Frost & Sullivan. "In addition, advanced integration and remote monitoring capabilities combined with falling prices is positioning surveillance as an affordable solution in security as well as non-security applications.'

To make surveillance cameras more technologically sophisticated, add more enhanced features, and make it inexpensive to all customers, components of the camera have been upgraded. As a result, it has been promoted from being a reactive tool to a pro-active security solution.

The entry of IT companies contributed to the transformation of security industry to the rapidly changing and complex world of networking and higher resolution images that offer vast amounts of information for business-intelligent purposes.

Eventhough there has been a development in the supply side, the IT and security-based knowledge among traditional security and IT distributors seems to be lacking. This led to a discrepancy between supply and demand.

'While forming the right business partnerships to complement security and IT know-how is important, educating channel partners and end users on the benefits of IP is critical for bridging the gap between supply and demand," added Rao.

European Video Surveillance Cameras Market comes under the Automatic Identification & Security Growth Partnership Services program.
