To further increase the functionality of their biometric fingerprint identification engines, and to make better use of smartcard technology, Neurotechnologija, a provider of high-precision biometric identification technologies, has introduced the Smartcard Finger-Match add-on.
The new offering is available for the company’s VeriFinger and MegaMatcher fingerprint identification engines and makes it possible to store and verify biometric fingerprint information right from a smartcard.
With this capability it becomes possible for individuals to maintain and protect their own information and gives another layer of security by combining smartcards and fingerprint verification technology together into one offering.
The new offerings match-on-card technology stores biometric information on the smartcard and allow matching of the biometrics to take place in a microprocessor embedded in the card. This helps to prevent personal biometric information from having to pass through an external computer.
According to a news release, with the "VeriFinger or MegaMatcher fingerprint template generation algorithms, Smartcard Finger-Match provides the enhanced speed, accuracy and reliability required for high security applications such as passport and visa control, secured entry access, financial transactions and medical data access."
The advantages of the new offerings capabilities include:
--Enhanced security – two-factor authentication checks both the validity of the smartcard and the identity of the person presenting the card;
--Privacy – the original template remains on the smartcard, providing a safeguard against misuse of information or fraudulent scanning systems;
---Integration – implementing the system will not require major overhauls of existing infrastructure.
