Next-Gen Networks
Tracey Venters, telecom technologies, inc.
PSTN + new data networks
= IP telephony. It would seem a simple equation. However, it does presuppose
interoperability, for example, between IP telephony gateways and PSTN
switches. For while IP may be used to carry a call's actual voice data
across the long haul, if one or both parties to the call use a standard
telephone (attached to the PSTN), something must link the PSTN and the IP
telephony media gateways. And that something is SS7.

Services
Kevin Mayer, Editorial Director
The new network, like
nature itself, loves the edge. Much like the proximity, or confluence, of
different habitats gives rise to abundant life, so does the convergence of
voice and data give rise to a proliferation of network elements and
interworking schemes. And of these elements, one in particular not only
expresses but furthers the network efflorescence. And that element is the
softswitch, or edge router.
