ADVA Optical Networking to Showcase Advantages of Virtualization in Radio Access Backhaul Networks

ADVA (News - Alert) Optical Networking, a telecommunications vendor providing network equipment for voice, data, video and storage services, recently announced an upcoming demonstration on virtualization in radio access backhaul networks at Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) 2015. The company will primarily discuss how Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) can use Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) technology to eliminate the restrictions of hardware-coded networks.

ADVA Optical Networking (News - Alert) is currently developing a new Ethernet access device optimized for Radio Access Network (RAN) backhaul applications, which will host a variety of virtual network functions. ADVA Optical Networking’s AnyCell Connectivity technology will be at the center of a hands-on demonstration showcasing its integrated programmability and server capacity, in which it hosts a software-based virtual LTE (News - Alert) base station appliance. The live demo will show how NFV is a simplified, flexible solution that can effectively open new service opportunities.

“Our AnyCell Connectivity technology already provides automated configuration, advanced service assurance and precise synchronization distribution. With this demonstration, we take a further step towards network optimization,” said Stephan Rettenberger, Vice President of Marketing at ADVA Optical Networking. “Combining NFV with proven RAN connectivity creates value far beyond providing such capability in isolation. That's why this demonstration is so important. It shows just how much potential is here. MNOs have a genuine opportunity to reassess their RAN architectures.”

The company’s showcase will provide an in-depth explanation of virtualization at the RAN edge as well as its advantages and possible applications, demonstrating how MNOs have much to gain. NFV technology includes content caching, advanced network security, RAN optimization and other functions that can significantly enhance the user experience while simplifying operations and enabling efficient resource utilization. Furthermore, hosting virtual functions at the edge of the RAN leads to faster service innovation and smarter use of physical space.

More information about ADVA Optical Networking’s technology can be found at the company’s live demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2015, taking place Mar 2-5 in Barcelona, Spain.
