Etymotic Research Launches Smartphone Compatible Earphones and Headsets

Etymotic Research, which invents and makes noise-isolating, high-fidelity in-ear earphones, has announced the launch of a new, low-cost version of its hf2 and hf3 headsets which are compatible with the iPhone (News - Alert), BlackBerry and other smartphones.

Also, the company has announced the launch of the mc5 earphones for iPod and other music players.

According to officials with Etymotic, the mc-series leverages the capabilities of affordable moving coil drivers and uses a clever Etymotic acoustic treatment for correcting performance issues associated with moving coil or dynamic speakers.

Mead Killion, chief technology officer and president of Etymotic Research also noted that the mc-series uses a patent-pending, response-shaping method that creates an acoustic side branch to redistribute acoustic energy.

“This modification results in smoothing the undesirable response peak and compensating for weak highs,” Killion said.

The mc3 headset will be available for $99 according to company officials while the mc5 earphones will be available at $79 at retail outlets.

The company will also be demonstrating the new mc-series of earphones and other devices at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
