Hooray for Sprint, Bringer of the 4G Phone!

By Carl Ford, Partner, Crossfire Media

When I bought mine on the first day, the trickle was consistent, nothing like the initial iPhone (News - Alert) insanity, but enough to see that Sprint had a winner on its hands.

It's a good device and I am impressed with all the efforts the wireless operator has made to deliver a sound experience.

I have yet to touch a 4G network (I have to drive to where the WiMAX (News - Alert) is, but the 3G experience has been good).

Some interesting issues, I would like to understand.

They let me buy it on Friday, but the Sprint (News - Alert) call centers were closed over the weekend.

I could get tech support, but some of the questions I had were more basic.

HTC EVO 4G

Secondly, the system is a hotspot for eight devices, but it does not act like as access point if I find a WiFi network in the area. So this means that Sprint is bucking the trend of using dual mode to offload the traffic.

It would nice to see the system choose the best path and not just force you to reconfigure all your other devices when WiFi is available.

The video is amazing and the kickstand works well. It would nice if QiK had a directory somewhere for people to find each other. At the store, the Sprint team was using Fring to do the video. A tie into Push to Talk [PTT] would be ideal.

Juxtaposed to ATT's pricing announcement, Sprint and Clearwire are now the companies keeping the torch of bundled, all-you-can-eat pricing.

Sprint has publicly stated that the HTC (News - Alert) EVO is the smart phone they want to be associated with for the most of the year and it's a worthy competitor to everything out there. Android is a good environment to develop on and with this phone's processing ability there are a lot of applications that could be developed that would be unique in the market.

I expect we will see a video editor in the near future for Android that takes advantage of the client processing. It will also be interesting to see if native speech recognition improves on this device.

I would say the HTC EVO and Sprint have naturally selected an evolutionary path where they will thrive.
Viva la EVOlution.
