Amazon SimpleDB Draws Developers with Speed, Querying Features

By Anita B., TMCnet Contributor

According to reports, the latest offering to come out of the Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, is the unlimited public beta version of Amazon SimpleDB.

The Web service provides the core database functions of data indexing and querying and also works in sync with Amazon Simple Storage Service and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. Together, they provide the ability to store, process and query data sets in the cloud, making Web-scale computing easier and more cost-effective for developers.

According to said Matt Domo, General Manager of Amazon SimpleDB, traditional clustered relational databases often require a sizeable upfront investment and complex design.

“Our customers have asked us for a simple, scalable, reliable and low latency alternative,” Domo said.

Amazon SimpleDB claims to be simpler than traditional clustered relational databases, requiring no schema, automatically indexing user data and providing a simple API for storage and access. The service is designed to alleviate the administrative burden of data modeling, index maintenance, and performance tuning.

The product already is making a difference at MyMiniLife.com, a social networking site – shown at right – that allows people to express their physical life on the Web. It processes millions of transactions per day and needed a highly scalable system to support the load.

“We jumped on to SimpleDB when it was in Private Beta and we’ve been extremely impressed with its scalability, low cost, and support team responsiveness,” said Joel Poloney, Co-Founder of MyMiniLife.com.

The ability to store structured data without first defining a schema provides developers with greater flexibility when building applications and eliminates the need to re-factor an entire database as those applications evolve. Developers gain access to this highly scalable functionality within Amazon’s proven computing environment and pay only for what they use.

To get started, any developer or business can sign up and start using the service immediately. Users can take advantage of a free monthly usage tier that will be on offer for at least the next six months, and reduced pricing for structured data storage. Every month, customers receive 25 machine hours, 1 GB of data transfer in and out, and 1 GB of storage at no charge. Technical support is also available at hand as customers have access to developer support engineers around the clock.

Customers can expect these features from Amazon Simple DB in the near future to help plan their future hardware and software investments. With Select API, developers will be able to employ a familiar SQL-like query language when constructing queries and building applications. Batch Put will help developers streamline the upload of multiple items or attributes with a single batch API request rather than multiple single-item calls.
