Wind River, Kyocera to Develop Open Source Android-Based Mobile Platform

Kyocera (News - Alert) Wireless Corp. reportedly is developing product platform that incorporates Google’s (News - Alert) Android mobile software.

 

The San Diego-based company says it’s collaborating with Wind River, a device software optimization provider based in Alameda, California, which will provide solutions and services that leverage its work in the Open Handset Alliance (News - Alert) and experience in commercial Linux.

 

According to companies’ sources, Wind River will provide software systems integration services, including middleware and user interface integration, optimization of Android, and custom integration for technologies from other Open Handset Alliance members and third-party developers.

 

Dave Carey, vice president and general manager of the consumer products group at Kyocera – whose new E3500 phone is shown below – said that his company’s adoption of the Android platform shows how Kyocera is driving the convergence of telecommunication, broadband and multimedia technologies in mobile devices.

According to Jason Whitmire, general manager of the mobile segment at Wind River, the mobile handset industry is undergoing a radical shift – where mobile solutions are based on open source stacks, supported by ecosystems of developers and managed by a participant-led consortium.

 

As a Linux Commercialization Partner of the Open Handset Alliance, Wind River is at the nexus of the mobile ecosystem, Whitmire says. Its Android systems integration services will provide their broad mobile and deep open source expertise to Kyocera Wireless (News - Alert) to help them accomplish their market goals.

 

Kyocera Wireless is a global manufacturer of wireless handsets, devices and embedded machine-to-machine (M2M) modules. The company was in news last month when Ctek, a manufacturer of specialized communications solutions for industrial and commercial applications, selected the Kyocera 300 Module for Ctek’s cost-effective Z4100 Router.
