Digicel Announces Text and Voice Donation Line to Support Haiti Relief Efforts

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Digicel Group reportedly announced the launch of a text and voice donation line to enable its 10 million plus customers worldwide to donate money to aid the massive relief efforts in Haiti.

The company announced it will donate all funds it receives from the text and voice donation line to the relief efforts in Haiti following the earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince and other parts of the country Jan. 12 Digicel (News - Alert) subscribers in any of its 32 markets worldwide can participate in this humanitarian effort by just texting the word “HELP” or calling a short code, the company said. There is no restriction on the number of texts or calls a customer can send or make, so people are free to donate as much as they like.

“As a part of the Caribbean community, we are committed to finding every possible way to help the people of Haiti in their time of need,” Colm Delves, Digicel Group CEO, said.

Digicel has already donated US$5 million to the emergency relief efforts in the form of donations to NGOs in Haiti, Delves added.

“We are now also offering our 10 million customers the opportunity to join us in supporting our neighbors in Haiti. Together, we can truly make a difference in the wake of this terrible disaster,” he said.

Caribbean and Central American nationals living in the Diaspora can also take part in the text donation.

Customers who wish to donate can dial the Digicel number 876 295 0000 in select Digicel retail stores in the U.S., U.K, the Bahamas, Canada, the French West Indies and Turks and Caicos, or via Digicel Online Top Up on www.digiceljamaica.com. Digicel will send the money directly to its NGO partners in Haiti.

Digicel, the largest mobile telecommunications operator in the Caribbean made entry to Central American mobile market in early 2007.

The company recently announced Mpathix, a provider of messaging services to telecom carriers, has launched next-generation voice and messaging services in three of Digicel’s South Pacific markets.
