Appro, NEC Partnership on Solutions for Managing Integrated Technologies

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Appro and NEC (News - Alert) Corporation have expanded their strategic partnership. NEC’s HPC solution will now feature Appro’s Xtreme-X Supercomputer and its Cluster Engine Software Management.

This partnership will help Appro and NEC to work on reducing complexity of technology integration when deploying and managing integrated solutions, while lowering customer total cost of ownership (TCO).

Appro developer of workstations, density-managed servers, clusters and supercomputers claims to work with its strategic partners to create a complete solution for a specific customer or market.

Appro believe that their partners work to optimize its products to ensure compatibility, high-performance, and to deliver a complete integrated solution. These combined solutions allow the strategic partners and Appro to meet the growing demand for more compute power, configuration flexibility and reliability for the enterprise and high-performance computing markets.

Commencing from September 2008, Appro Supercomputer products will be added to NEC's HPC offering as a first step in this partnership.

“This strategic partnership is a major breakthrough for Appro's supercomputers entry into the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) HPC market,” said  Daniel Kim, CEO of Appro. “By combining NEC's strong technology base and market position in EMEA together with Appro's cluster deployment successes in the HPC market, the partnership will provide sustainable competitive advantages enabling both Appro and NEC to take greater advantage of this growing market segment.”

NEC Corporation’s core focuses are Internet, broadband network and enterprise business solutions. With NEC's strong technology base in EMEA and Appro's cluster deployment successes in the HPC market, this partnership is line dup to provide sustainable and competitive advantages, enabling both companies to take a greater share of a growing market.

Steve Conway, IDC (News - Alert) research vice president for HPC, said Appro has stepped into the HPC market limelight by winning contracts for large-scale HPC systems at the U.S. Department of Energy's Tri-Labs ( LLNL, SNL, LANL), University of Tsukuba, one of Japan's leading academic research institutions and in Europe with ING Renault Formula1 Team.

“IDC estimates that clusters will continue to be the main growth engines for the WW HPC market, driving server revenue from $10 billion in 2006 to more than $15 billion in 2011,” Conway predicted.

Appro headquarters are in Milpitas, California. The company also runs an R&D/manufacturing center in Asia and a sales and service office in Houston.
