Defining Unified Communications Security: Are You Secure?

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

Enterprises are increasingly looking to benefit from voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), such as cost savings, business continuity and mobility, which were promised to be delivered through VoIP utilization years ago.

In order fully benefit, enterprises need to extend their VoIP infrastructure and deploy unified communications (UC) over untrusted networks. However, extending the VoIP infrastructure makes it an easy target for tampering that could cause denial of service (DoS) attacks or result in the hijacking of legitimate IP phones for theft of service.

In addition to protecting the infrastructure and phone, there are additional issues that must be addressed, including:

·    Policy enforcement of granular security and call routing rules
·    Strong authentication of device and user for access control
·    Privacy of signaling and media
·    Other issues such as firewall/NAT traversal, phone configuration, media anchoring, etc.

While many products claim to offer VoIP and UC security, in addition to their other responsibilities, it is a big challenge, if not impossible, to achieve and maintain usable quality of service (QoS) in UC deployments while offering comprehensive UC security functionality. As UC becomes more prevalent and feature-rich, the need for a real-time UC security solution becomes obvious.

Join Jason Ostrom, director of the Sipera VIPER Lab, and Eric Winsborrow (News - Alert),
chief marketing officer for Sipera Systems and moderator, Erik Lanask, group managing editor at Technology Marketing Corporation, on Tuesday, July 22 at 11:00am ET/ 8:00am PT, for an informational Webinar that will discuss security best practices for VoIP and UC to explore what’s needed in addition to existing data security ones.

In this Webinar you will learn about:

·    Unique threats that target the enterprise UC networks.

·    Recent VoIP vulnerability research and insights.

·    UC security best practices and the data security ones needed.

·    Shortcomings of existing data security products in satisfying all best practices.

·    Requirements for a comprehensive, real-time UC security solution.

This Webinar series should be attended by CIO/CSOs, Directors/Managers of IT or Telecom, and any telephony or IT decision makers in enterprises looking to expand their UC and VoIP deployments.

Sipera Systems (News - Alert) is a provider of real-time UC security, and enables enterprises to deploy VoIP and unified communications simply and with confidence while helping service providers protect and offer new IP-based communication services.

Sipera proactively identifies VoIP threats through its Sipera VIPER Lab which is comprised of knowledgeable VoIP and security architects and engineers. Every day, these VIPER Lab staffers research and identify vulnerabilities and potential exploits in VoIP protocols, VoIP equipment and phones. To date, they have published threat advisories for several WiFi (News - Alert)/dual-mode phones, softphones and VoIP hardphones including those allowing remote attackers to carry out VoIP-to-data exploits, spoofing and denial-of-service attacks, unwanted reboots, and uninitiated toll calls.
