Survey: Thirty-one Percent of U.S. Firms to Adopt Energy-Efficient Communications Solutions in 2009By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor Green initiatives are getting a boost during this economic slowdown. As organizations become more fund conscious, green strategies that focus on saving valuable resources are finding more relevance.
A recent survey commissioned by Lantronix, provider of secure communication technologies, finds that green IT initiatives are a top priority for 31 percent of U.S. businesses in 2009. Also, 40 percent of businesses already have green initiatives in place, with plans to intensify them in the future.
This year, IT business managers give more focus to areas like reducing the number of costly, inefficient service calls and optimizing the time of skilled service technicians while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
Remote access and management solutions are one of the most preferred technologies during a recession. By allowing remote access via network-connected equipment, they allow administrators to access, troubleshoot and manage networked devices from virtually anywhere. In effect, they help reduce carbon footprint and save money otherwise allocated for fuel and travel.
Also, remote management enables companies to quickly engage skilled service technicians with the customer by avoiding inherent delays and inefficiencies of deploying them to customer sites.
By optimizing the time of skilled technicians, IT companies can increase productivity. Realizing this, 43 percent of 300 IT professionals report dispatching highly-trained service technicians at least once each week, and more than 20 percent do so three or more times per week, the survey finds.
Whether a byproduct of cost savings due to decreased travel, or from an effort to ease a company's impact on the environment, such response indicates increasing business interest in eco-conscious practices, officials at Lantronix (News - Alert) said.
“IT managers are seeking green solutions that maintain high quality of service, decrease operating costs and optimize available personnel,” said Jerry Chase, CEO of Lantronix, in a statement. “Remote access and management of networked equipment reduces carbon footprints and operating costs, and improves quality of service with more efficient solution implementation.” A number of other researches have already highlighted this fact, say Lantronix officials. For example, Yankee Group (News - Alert) recently predicted that money spent on truck rolls will surpass $6.5 billion by 2010 in the IPTV industry alone.
