BroadSoft's Xtended Gives Web 2.0 Applications a Voice

By Anita B., TMCnet Contributor

For BroadSoft, a worldwide provider of VoIP applications, its Xtended program has performed significantly well based on service provider adoption, developer participation and application development.

The Xtended program was launched in March 2008 to drive the integration of voice and Web 2.0 applications. It enables service providers to offer enhanced, productivity-improving applications that extend the value of their telephony service.
Xtended continues to gain momentum across the Web 2.0 ecosystem and is rapidly being accepted globally as a popular choice as a Voice 2.0 program amongst a growing number of service providers.
"In today's dynamic and competitive marketplace, providers need to extend their networks' to attract and retain customers with innovative, differentiated services," said Leslie Ferry, vice president of marketing at BroadSoft (News - Alert).
Alteva, SimpleSignal, Telesphere, Unity, and WorldxChange Communications are just some of the service providers who have implemented the Xtended platform in order to develop new services that increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. Recently, Nianet, a Danish provider of virtual private network (VPN) and Internet services, deployed the BroadWorks VoIP application platform to deliver hosted unified communications services to enterprises in Denmark.
Xtended developers promote their applications to more than 450 service providers and their customers via the Marketplace. It also has in place a Developers Program that helps give developers access to a global audience, as well as the information and tools they require to create new voice mashups. William Bumbernick, CEO of Alteva (News - Alert), a business VoIP provider, said the API is simple and developer agnostic. Since it is mostly HTTP calls, any developer can rapidly adapt to the guidelines of the API regardless of experience set.
"Providing niche services through Web 2.0 applications enables us to differentiate itself and add to the 'stickiness' of our services," said Dave Gilbert, CEO of SimpleSignal (News - Alert), a business VoIP provider that won a bid away from a tier-one provider because of its BroadSoft Unified Connector for Salesforce.
A recurring Xtended developer and former winner of Broadsoft’s 2008 Xtended voice mashup contest, Joseph Farrar, president of JoeDeveloper.NET (News - Alert), said that the program provides the development community with the ability to quickly develop and distribute new innovative 'carrier-class' mashups, while also offering them direct access to a market and money. Farrar has been contacted by service providers about developing customized versions of his Click2Message Facebook application for their consumer subscribers.
