Alcatel-Lucent and McAfee Team to Develop Security Solution for Laptops

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Alcatel-Lucent, a provider of telecommunications technology solutions, today announced collaboration with security solution provider, McAfee (News - Alert) to develop a mobile security solution to protect data in lost or stolen laptops.

The combined technology from Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) and McAfee provides extensive auditing and reporting capabilities with improved visibility, reduced risk and increased policy compliance, a media statement from the companies said.

The new mobile security solution integrates Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian (NLG) with McAfee Endpoint Encryption software. OmniAccess 3500 NLG enables enterprises to oversee security on their mobile laptops and gives a 24x7 view of the data they contain, regardless of the power status of the laptop. NLG also integrates with encryption vendors very easily.

The NLG leverages third generation (3G) networks such as code division multiple access (CDMA) and high-speed packet-link access (HSPA) and allows easy management of the laptop PCs remotely. Using this technology, IT staff can track the laptops on the move, apply patches or software updates and secure or control data on them at anytime, even when the laptop is turned off.

The McAfee Endpoint Encryption software, formerly known as SafeBoot Encryption, prevents unauthorized access to data. It uses a powerful full-disk encryption feature that ensures information security on mobile devices. The Encryption software includes features such as access control, file and folder encryption, synchronized password changes and centralized management.

The McAfee solution also includes reporting and auditing capabilities to meet various compliance requirements. The solution can be easily integrated with the existing infrastructure of enterprises.

McAfee already supports the widest range and variety of authentication devices available on the market, but this card has truly unique features, said Frank Jorissen, vice president, international business development with McAfee’s Data Protection Business Unit.

“The NLG behaves as a remotely controlled ‘ignition key’ for laptops. When lost or stolen, a remote administrator can wipe critical user keys and force the laptop to reboot to the pre-boot logon screen, keeping all data totally beyond compromise,” stated Jorissen.

“The combination of the Alcatel-Lucent always on OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian, along with McAfee Endpoint Encryption software, will allow enterprise IT managers to protect lost and stolen laptops because of its strong encryption with remote capabilities and GPS location for laptop recovery,” said Shekhar Agrawal, director of enterprise and verticals - South Asia, Alcatel-Lucent.
Alcatel-Lucent has also joined McAfee Security Innovation Alliance to enable smart card pre-boot authentication and “remote kill” capabilities for laptops, thereby assuring data protection and compliance.
