Multi-Tech Ships New Wireless Modem for M2M Apps

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Multi-Tech Systems is now shipping its SocketModem GPRS (model MTSMC-G-F4-IP), a new embedded modem for machine-to-machine (M2M) applications that includes the company’s Universal IP (UIP) stack. With this design developers can add wireless communications to products with a minimum of development time and expense and retain the IP stack interface for implementing other communications technologies in future applications.

Working as a complete, ready-to-integrate, communications device, the new wireless modem offers standards-based GSM/GPRS Class 10 performance. The SocketModem GPRS, model MTSMC-G-F4-IP allows developers to add wireless communication to products with a minimum of development time and expense. According to company’s sources, the new modem is part of Multi-Tech Systems’ Universal Socket Connectivity family that shares common design footprint and pin assignments.

The universal IP stack takes the burden of supporting TCP/IP functionality from the design hardware and software and makes it part of the communications module, according to Bill Chesney, vice president of Sales for Multi-Tech Systems. He explained that designers must still program to the Multi-Tech Universal IP stack, but that interface will be standard for multiple communications technologies. The company’s new SocketModem GPRS is the first in a line of embedded communications products that include Multi-Tech's Universal IP stack.

The company’s officials further explain that Multi-Tech’s Universal IP (UIP) implemented in the new SocketModem GPRS consists of a common set of TCP/IP networking protocols and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications implemented using a standard AT command interface. With UIP developers can write their host application one time and enjoy the freedom to choose from a growing number of Universal Socket communication devices.

Multi-Tech Systems also recently began shipping a new embedded HSDPA modem. Designed for developers, this modem enables the addition of cellular wireless communications to products with a minimum of development time and expense.

Offering standards-based tri-band UMTS/HSDPA cellular communications, the new SocketModem HSDPA is available in USB or serial interface versions that can match the requirements for adding cellular capability to new or legacy designs.
