Bulgaria Telecom Operator Picks Huawei

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

TransTelecom, a telecom operator in Bulgaria, has chosen Huawei (News - Alert) to deploy a commercial WiMAX network, covering central business districts and hot spots in the country's major cities, including its capital, Sofia, and Varna, Bulgaria's largest harbor city.

Huawei will supply an end-to-end WiMAX solution working on 3.5GHz frequency band, including terminals, as well as a major upgrade of the TransTelecom central exchange equipment for the operation of a fully mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) network in 2008.

TransTelecom reportedly deployed a 16d-based WiMAX network to meet the country's increasing broadband needs in 2006. The operator chose Huawei to deliver an upgraded 16e-based network.

Thanks to Huawei's new base stations, TransTelecom can quickly roll out innovative new services to its customers, while reducing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

“We are delighted to choose Huawei as our WiMAX equipment supplier,” said John Munnery, chairman of TransTelecom in a statement.

Munnery pointed that the extensive tests of this new technology have surpassed all their expectations. The operator witnessed Huawei demonstrate one of the first handovers of traffic from one base station to another in Europe. Huawei has exhibited total commitment to the project throughout their selection process, and has proven them to be one of the leaders in this fast-developing technology.

“What's more, we are also impressed with Huawei’s localized engineering and delivery capability,” he added.

Jim Xu, president of Huawei Eastern Europe Region said that Huawei has deep capabilities in network migration paths for WiMAX commercial deployments.

Xu added that with their rich delivery experience and professional localized engineering team, they are confident that they can help TransTelecom to provide an excellent wireless broadband service.

TransTelecom EAD is a Bulgarian telecom operator which offers new generation telecom services. The company was established in 2003 and is a whole-stock subsidiary holding by Bulgaria Petrol Holding AD.
