Ericsson Supports the Launch of Seven Digital Cities in Greece
By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Ericsson ( News - Alert) has reportedly inked turnkey deals as the total solution provider and prime integrator of Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) to support the launch of seven digital cities across Greece.
Ericsson will supply and install fiber optic telecommunications networks in the municipalities of Agrinio, Chania, Ermoupolis, Ierapetra, Iraklio, Kozani and Rethymno.
Initially, the networks will link municipal buildings, bolstering public infrastructure for citizens and providing high-speed, premium quality broadband services to support innovative next-generation services. Roll out has already begun.
The contract includes the FTTx (Fiber-to-the-Premises) backbone telecommunications infrastructure, and switching and WiFi ( News - Alert) systems. According to Ericsson, as prime integrator they are the single interface deploying and integrating multi-vendor systems as well as managing vendor relations including deployment, systems integration and customer support.
“Ericsson's end-to-end solution represents a springboard for improving public services and supporting regional economic growth,” said Spyros Nikolaou, president and responsible in Ericsson Greece, Cyprus, Albania and Malta.
Nikolaou explained in a statement that this initiative builds upon earlier Metropolitan Area Network projects implemented across Greece and reflects their goal of bringing communications to all. He emphasized that it sets the stage for the introduction of next-generation networks, offering high-speed broadband access and first rate telecommunications services across Greece.
Ericsson made news earlier this month when Operator 3 chose the company to develop and host its award-winning mobile music service, 3Music, in Sweden and Denmark.
