RipCode Joins with Texas Instruments to Offer Video Transcoding Appliance

By Brian Solomon, TMCnet Web Editor

RipCode has announced a collaboration with Texas Instruments (News - Alert) to deliver the industry’s first DSP-based video transcoding appliance for Internet video. RipCode’s V4 video transcoding appliance is built on a robust, configurable, scalable and multi-DSP platform using open architecture standards. It uses TI’s DaVinci technology tailored for digital video systems. RipCode is able to replace between 10-20 GPP transcode servers, thus improving revenue via energy and cooling cost savings.

Taking advantage of TI’s comprehensive DaVinci portfolio of optimized software, development tools, application frameworks and integrated programmable DSP-based system-on-chip (SoCs)m the RipCode V4 supports simultaneous, multi-channel switching between file-to-file, stream-to-stream and on-demand transcoding in a single rack-unit appliance.

“Video transcoding requires intensive processing power. And with more than 500,000 videos uploaded to the Internet every day, new, more efficient technologies are needed to transcode video faster and to a larger and more expansive set of video-enabled devices,” said Brendon Mills, CEO of RipCode. “RipCode designed our transcoding appliance using TI’s DaVinci DSP processors specifically to address today’s unique Web 2.0 needs.”

RipCode’s transcoding appliance accelerates the process of re-purposing mobile and Internet video across a wide array of media. This high concurrency, consolidated processing allows RipCode to lower the barriers restricting content from being viewed on multiple mediums, replace less-efficient and more-expensive GPP transcode servers, and reduce an overall storage, hardware and energy use.

RipCode’s high concurrency transcoding appliance offers a high-performance, energy-efficient alternative to general purpose video transcode servers. This is useful for broadcasters, syndicators and video sites, letting them reduce the amount of hardware, storage and energy use needed to process increasing video volume by more than 80% over non-DSP solutions.
