Letters To The Editor
November 2000

The following letter refers to Tom Keating's Cc: column "Customers, VoIP And E-Business -- A Love Story," in the September issue.

Hi Tom,
Great article! ("Customers, VoIP and E-Business --A Love Story"). Will you be doing a follow-up? eStara would love to be included in any reference to e-business, as well as quality of voice and ease of use.

Sincerely,

Dana Johnston
eStara

Tom Keating responds:
I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I wish I knew about your company sooner or I would have mentioned you as well. Since I wrote that column I have examined eStara's ASP-model VoIP product for e-business and I must say, I was impressed. I suggest our readers check out their Web site.

The following letter refers to Tom Keating's Cc: column, "Staying On Top," in the August issue.

Hello Tom,
I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed reading your article, "Staying On Top." In my quest to learn as much as I can in the IP telephony industry, sometimes I too feel like I am a "technology reading machine."

I look forward to more articles with a spin of humor in them. It makes for an enjoyable read.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Andrews

The following article refers to Tom Keating's Cc: column, "I've Got The Bandwidth Blues" in the June issue.

Tom,
I just finished your article, and almost broke into tears because I have finally found someone who understands what I have been going through.

Last Saturday morning, my connection started freezing. Nothing would go out. Mind you, I have tried the pinging idea to see if it is packet loss, but I do plan to look at that tonight. The different thing about my problem is that when it freezes, if I reset the power to my cable modem (GE Surfboard 3100), my connection comes back... for about 15 minutes.

I have techs who are completely confused as to what to do next. I'm holding out hope that it's a problem with the modem itself and I am trying to get them to come switch it out. However, after reading your article, I wonder if the hardware is just fine?

I sat down this morning and started writing a log of everything I've done since a few days before the problem, to the present. I ended up emailing it to the help desk at Charter and I haven't heard anything back yet. I'll let you know what I end up finding out.

Sincerely,

Claude D. Whittle, Jr., P.E.
