JiWire, a mobile media company, has released its second Mobile Audience Insights Report on WiFi (
News -
Alert) usage trends for the third quarter of 2009.
The Mobile Audience Insights Report includes findings from a survey conducted of 2,644 WiFi customers in airports across the U.S. that used JiWire's (
News -
Alert) WiFi Media Channel in between June and July 2009.
With the report, advertisers can understand this unique segment of the “on-the-go” audience that consists of affluent business decision makers.
Data from approximately 280,000 public WiFi hotspot locations across the U.S has also been used in the report.
The study found that airport business travelers are connecting via WiFi for a significant amount of time. In fact, 81 percent of those surveyed spend more than 30 minutes online while waiting for their flight, whereas 32 percent spend over an hour online.
In addition, the study uncovered that 72 percent of airport audiences consist of business travelers. Among these travelers, 50 percent travel at least once a month more than half hold an executive or management position and have annual household incomes of over $100,000.
The use of mobile devices to connect to WiFi locations grew 75 percent from the third quarter. The top mobile devices,
iPhone and iPod Touch, when combined make up about 95 percent of mobile Ad requests. At number four on the list, devices built on the Android (
News -
Alert)-operating system, while the Palm Pre ranked number five, similar to last quarter.
The last five years have seen the number of WiFi locations growing by 425 percent. In addition to growth in locations, the usage of WiFi is also increasing.
Hotels have the largest amount of WiFi visits with 65.5 percent market share, while airports are the quickest growing venue with visits up 23.2 percent over last quarter.
