Airspan Picks Wintegra for Mobile WiMAX Base Stations

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Wintegra WinMax packet processor will be used in Airspan’s next generation of optimized Mobile WiMAX base stations, known as MicroMAXe and MacroMAXe. Airspan intends to use the Wintegra 802.16e mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) MAC processor in conjunction with its existing WiMAX MAC software and PHY technology, which was developed with picoChip, Ltd.

Part of the WinPath2 family of processors, the WinMax packet processor offers pin-compatible MAC and network interface capabilities scaling from low-cost picocells to multi-sector macro cell base stations. Wintegra’s WinPath2 is a cost-effective, highly scaleable, fully programmable silicon that can provide complete upper and lower MAC and IP capabilities for WiMAX, WiBro, 3G, LTE (Long Term Evolution) and UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) systems. The solution also provides full network connectivity features such as IPSec, Kasumi, NAT, Ethernet link aggregation, IP and GRE tunneling and ASN Gateway (News - Alert) interfaces.

Paul Senior, chief technical officer of Airspan Networks said that the flexibility and scalability of the Wintegra MAC processor, and their ability to re-use their high performance WiMAX MAC software enables them to create optimized next generation Mobile WiMAX Base stations able to support the needs of both today's Release 1.0 and tomorrow's Release 1.x Mobile WiMAX Radio interfaces. Time to market is critical in an emerging market such as Mobile WiMAX, and Airspan is very pleased to be partnering with Wintegra.

Equipment manufacturers and network operators can use WinPath2 to build very cost effective and highly scalable networks around a common platform that can utilize pin-compatible, software-compatible processors. Wintegra also offers a software package for MAC development providing customers full access to source code and development tools. Customers thus have the option of using the standard Wintegra production software, or adding proprietary features to the Wintegra MAC code, or using their own MAC code.

“Airspan Networks (News - Alert) is a proven leader in WiMAX, and Wintegra is committed to helping Airspan extend that market leadership through use of our WinPath2 / WinMax processor and software,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager of Wireless Systems at Wintegra, Michael Phillip in a statement.

“We share Airspan's goal to bring flexible, cost-effective solutions to market quickly, enabling Internet access from almost anywhere in the world,” he added.
