Airspan Networks Chooses Wintegra for Mobile WiMAX Base Stations

AUSTIN, Texas --(Business Wire)-- Wintegra, Inc. announced today that Airspan Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:AIRN), a leading worldwide provider of WiMAX and Wi-Fi based broadband wireless access networks, will use the Wintegra WinMax packet processor in Airspan's next generation of optimized Mobile WiMAX base stations, known as MicroMAXe and MacroMAXe. Airspan, a founding member of WiMAX Forum and a leading vendor of wireless products and solutions in more than 100 countries worldwide, will use the Wintegra 802.16e mobile WiMAX MAC processor in conjunction with its existing WiMAX MAC software and PHY technology, developed with picoChip, Ltd.

The WinMax packet processor, part of the WinPath2 family of processors, offers pin-compatible MAC and network interface capabilities scaling from low-cost picocells to multi-sector macro cell base stations, has been shipping in volume production since April 2007. WinPath2 is a highly scaleable, fully programmable silicon that can provide complete upper and lower MAC and IP capabilities for WiMAX, WiBro, 3G, LTE (Long Term Evolution) and UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) systems. The cost-effective Wintegra solution also provides full network connectivity features such as IPSec, Kasumi, NAT, Ethernet link aggregation, IP and GRE tunneling and ASN Gateway interfaces.

"The flexibility and scalability of the Wintegra MAC processor, and our ability to re-use our high performance WiMAX MAC software enables us to create optimized next generation Mobile WiMAX Base stations able to support the needs of both today's Release 1.0 and tomorrow's Release 1.x Mobile WiMAX Radio interfaces," said Paul Senior, chief technical officer of Airspan Networks. "Time to market is critical in an emerging market such as Mobile WiMAX, and we are very pleased to be partnering with Wintegra."

WinPath2 permits equipment manufacturers and network operators to build very cost effective and highly scalable networks around a common platform that can utilize pin-compatible, software-compatible processors. In addition to its WinMax processors, Wintegra offers a software package for MAC development. In this package customers have full access to source code and development tools, giving customers the option of using the standard Wintegra production software, or adding proprietary features to the Wintegra MAC code, or using their own MAC code.

"Airspan Networks is a proven leader in WiMAX, and Wintegra is committed to helping Airspan extend that market leadership through use of our WinPath2 / WinMax processor and software," said Michael Phillip, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Wireless Systems at Wintegra. "We share Airspan's goal to bring flexible, cost-effective solutions to market quickly, enabling Internet access from almost anywhere in the world."

Wintegra provides a broad range of integrated silicon and software solutions for WiBro, WiMAX, 3G and LTE base stations and RNCs, network interfaces, broadband wireless access, 2G and 3G cell site aggregation and backhaul. The Wintegra fixed and mobile WiBro and WiMAX solution consists of a family of pin-compatible, software-compatible and fully programmable network processors that can scale from single sector, highly integrated pico cells to multi-sector base stations, incorporating advanced antenna technology. Wintegra provides a complete software solution that incorporates the necessary scheduling, classification, encryption and QoS capabilities, as well as advanced features such as VLAN marking, payload header suppression (PHS), multiple CS layers, IP fragmentation and GRE and IP-in-IP tunneling, which are required to meet the R6 and R8 specifications of the WiMAX Forum network definition. These capabilities enable rapid integration with next-generation wireless access networks and ASN gateways.

With WiMAX customers in Israel, UK, North America, Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan, India and the Middle East, and with proven interoperability with virtually all major WiMAX CPE vendors, Wintegra continues to enable the worldwide adoption of advanced communication protocols and emerging standards through an innovative mix of software and silicon technologies that support field upgrades as new standards emerge.
