SPSS Ranks Tops in Data Mining

Predictive analytics solutions provider SPSS announced that its data mining technology has been ranked as the leading choice in an independent survey published by Rexer Analytics. The recognition builds on the success achieved by SPSS (News - Alert) in 2007, according to the company.

Data mining is a core component of predictive analytics. It uncovers patterns in data using predictive techniques. Data mining can help organizations increase the profitability of their interactions with customers, detect fraud, and improve risk management. SPSS predictive analytics technology and solutions allow customers to improve business processes by directing, optimizing and automating decisions, leading to smarter, proactive decisions.

The Rexer Analytics report, Surveying the Field: Data Mining Applications, Analytic Tools, and Practical Challenges, found almost one-half (48 percent) of data mining professionals from more than one dozen industries and 35 countries identified SPSS — over SAS (News - Alert) and other competitors — as their most frequently used data mining tool. The survey also found SPSS as the tool of choice for data miners engaged in customer relationship management (CRM) and telecommunications.

“Our report analyzes the activities, views, and concerns of more than 200 data miners and gives a comprehensive reflection of the challenges faced by the data mining community today,” said Karl Rexer, Ph.D., founder and principal of Rexer Analytics. “One clear finding is that data miners who care strongly about ease-of-use, data manipulation capabilities and the ability to handle very large data sets are more likely to use SPSS.”

“We’re delighted that the findings of the Rexer Analytics report endorse both our market position and our product strategy,” said Colin Shearer, senior vice president of market strategy at SPSS. “Not only are our products the most widely used, it’s clear that our focus on making the technology scalable, accessible and supported by rich facilities for data manipulation aligns perfectly with the most pressing needs of the market. That’s why we’re number one among organizations looking to realize the full value of their information assets, and to enable the acceleration of their businesses.”

SPSS also received honors and recognition in the following reports and surveys issued in 2007:

Gartner (News - Alert) positioned SPSS in the leaders quadrant of its “Magic Quadrant for Customer Data Mining, 2Q07.” The report states: “Leaders are vendors whose performance excels in the customer data mining market segment. Not only are they suitable for the majority of enterprises to consider today, but they also have a significant impact on the market’s direction and growth.”
A KDnuggets poll of “Data Mining (Analytic) Tools Used in 2007” released in May showed SPSS emerging as the leading provider of commercial data mining software.

Industry analyst firm Nucleus Research recognized SPSS for providing the technological advancements that led American Airlines to win a 2007 Nucleus Research Technology ROI Award. American Airlines, the world’s largest air carrier, relies on SPSS predictive analytics to generate customer information its executives use to make key business decisions.
