HDTV Set to Soar in European Homes

As LCD and plasma TVs become one of the hottest items on everyone's list, many are now looking to high definition technology to provide quality display on these screens.

In the European market, HD technology is really taking off and according to research from Strategy Analytics, will climb to 28.1 million units this year-- a 158 percent surge.

The report, "Europe's High Definition Homes," found that by 2012, 70 percent of European homes will have at least one HD-capable TV.

"European consumers are beginning to buy HD-capable devices in huge quantities and there is a terrific opportunity for content providers and distributors to meet the growing desire for HD programming," David Mercer, Principal Anaylst at Streagy Analytics commented.

"Awareness of high-definition is growing all the time and we expect this to feed into growing sales of Blu-ray Disc players, high definition camcorders and other HD devices," also commented Peter King, Director, Connected Home Devices.

The research also found that by 2012, 44 percent of European homes will own HDTV receivers like set-top boxes and integrated digital TVs.

Research firm InStat also reported that HDTV would soar in the Asia Pacific region and found that consumer revenues from HDTV content would grow from $3.2 billion in 2006 to $8.06 billion by 2012.  The research firm also predicted that by 2012, 42.1 million households in the region will have HDTV.
