Lytro and Chromat Bring Light Field Photography to MADE Fashion Week New York

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Lytro, Inc.  a startup company which was founded by a light field researcher at Stanford University named Ren Ng, in 2006, company manufactures plenoptic cameras for consumer use.

A light-field camera, also called a plenoptic camera, is a camera that uses a microlens array to capture 4D light field information about a scene. Such light field information can be used to improve the solution of computer graphics and computer vision-related problems, and to make digital plenoptic pictures that can be refocused after they are taken. In 2011, Lytro introduced its first generation pocket-sized camera, capable of refocusing images after being taken.

Chromat is an American fashion label that is based in New York City. The label was formed by Becca McCharen in 2010. She comes from a theoretical background in architecture and urban design. Chromat focuses on structural experiments for the human body. McCharen has an interest in scaffolding, city maps, as well as wearable exoskeletons. This is emphasized by her signature architectural cages that include face cages, dome shaped skirts and geometric tops.

Lytro  is the professional camera partner of MADE Fashion Week New York which took place this week. Brooklyn-based fashion label Chromat presented its spring/summer 2015 collection at The Standard Hotel earlier this week. Since this style really creates a 3D look, the clothing does make a suitable fit for light field photography.

Azmat Ali, who is Lytro's vice president of marketing had the following to say about the experience, “We are excited to capture fashion photography in a different light at this premier event. With its emphasis on design and presentation, fashion is the perfect industry to take advantage of the rich interactive photographic experience made possible by LYTRO ILLUM. We look forward to seeing the innovative and creative uses of our technology by these leading artists and collaborating with MADE to usher in this new era of fashion photography.”

As part of Lytro’s partnership with MADE, we are looking at the industry’s first look book with images produced by plenoptic photography. An example of this type of photography can be seen by clicking here. This project is being led by New York City-based photographer Christine Hahn.

"Each fashion week, MADE seeks out visionary brand partners, like Lytro, who develop incredible new technology that can push the fashion industry further in new directions. Great photography is one of the tenets of the shows, and we are thrilled Lytro is making this futuristic technology more accessible to our creative culture." These were the comments made by Mazdack Rassi, co-founder of MADE Fashion Week.
