Facebook Teases New Service Or Product Announcement

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Despite its standing as the undisputed champion of the social networking sites, Facebook (News - Alert) seems to be trying to be having a very big 2013. The company has already shown off its new Facebook Home for the Android OS. While there are still some issues with actually launching the Facebook Phone it needs mentioning that you aren’t going to see that kind of integration with Twitter (News - Alert) or Instagram just yet.

Now, the social media site has announced that it is going to be rolling out a new product later this week and the rumor mill has been buzzing ever since that announcement.

The press event, set on the Menlo Park, California campus includes invitations that were sent out using the more traditional “snail mail.” On the invitation is a request for reporters to come see the “big idea” that a “small team” has been working hard on. The site recently rolled out a new feature where users could add hashtags to their posts.

The smart money seems to be on Facebook officially launching their postcard service to the general public. The site had actually rolled this service out to a select group last year and in November it said it was testing out pricing points for that service. The post card feature would allow for users to send physical copies of images on your profile through the regular mail. That would explain the use of snail mail to send out the invitations.

The other rumors that are flying around the Web today are that Facebook could be launching an RSS reader service to replace the soon to be dead Google (News - Alert) Reader. People won’t have to wait long to find out what the big announcement might be, the press event takes place Thursday at 9 AM Pacific time.
