CradlePoint: Enabling the Remote Network

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

YESCO digital signs now have a new source of power. One of the largest signage and digital outdoor display manufacturers in the world has partnered with CradlePoint (News - Alert), a global provider of 3G/4G wireless networking solutions targeted to the distributed enterprise. CradlePoint is now powering YESCO digital signs.

CradlePoint vice president of business development, Ken Hosac, shared that YESCO presented CradlePoint with the requirements for a networking solution that was reliable, cost-effective and flexible. YESCO not only has a diverse location of signs, the company also needed cloud-based access to each one. CradlePoint provided WiPipe Central, a cloud-based application and management platform to help YESCO improve productivity, reliability and intelligence within its operations.

This partnership developed based partly on YESCO’s need to remotely connect to its signs, which often are placed in locations where a wired Internet connection isn’t a practical choice. The reliable networking solution needed to be small enough to fit in the company’s signs, yet powerful enough to ensure complete network connectivity of any supporting functions, such as heat monitoring, surveillance cameras and the security system.

“We make some of the largest digital signs in the world, so downtime is not an option,” said Justin Montalto, Network and Wireless Communications Administrator for YESCO in a company statement. “The flexibility to connect with wired and wireless connections provides us and our customers with a sign that is network ready and easier to deploy.”

To learn more about the solutions offered by CradlePoint, TMCnet invited Hosac into the newsroom at ITEXPO (News - Alert) in Miami this year. He highlighted the basic approach the company takes to providing customers with the connections they need through major carriers, ensuring connectivity regardless of location or surrounding circumstances. Perhaps the most impressive is how the company responds to requests for additional networks.

“We are seeing a trend for purpose built pop up networks or separate networks,” shared Hosac. “There is so much in the news these days about credit card breeches that corporate IT, especially in retail stores, are very reluctant to add things to the network. We have seen one of the largest home improvement companies decide that they want to separate the employee traffic off of the point of sale device traffic so they create a separate network using our technology and our cloud based solution. One of the large bookstores, for example, sells tablets that are Wi-Fi enabled and they wanted customers to be able to use the tablets in the store without accessing the network. So, they create a popup network so you can use it. We are seeing quite a bit of that.”

The company is also seeing a rise in demand for the support of M2M technologies, enabling machines to effectively communicate and capture valuable data. As business intelligence-based data continues to be an important focus for companies throughout the world, opportunities are expected to mount for CradlePoint. For now, however, the company plans to continue to focus on its cloud-based strategies.

Hosac continued, “Our big emphasis is right now is on the cloud management application platform. We find that our target customer distributed enterprise, retail stores, quick serve restaurants, and branch offices all have a lot in common. They have very few IT resources on site. They are struggling with providing customer Wi-Fi and processing credit cards, so they need the solution to be PCI (News - Alert) compliant. Our development team is really cranking along on enabling applications that can help these distributed enterprises manage their networks easily.”
