Market Trends in UC Could Prove Challenging

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor
The telecommunications industry is one that is constantly shifting as new innovations continue to hit the market and consumer trends drive faster than the wind of change. The business communications industry in general is one prime example. As voice is increasingly absorbed into the broader unified communications and collaboration value propositions, consumers are readily exploring solutions to support this shift.

Customers today also have greater choice and flexibility in their selection of software-based competitive solutions. Features and capabilities once out of reach for the organization are now readily available in the cloud. Business models are starting to change to reflect these dynamics as decision makers are seeking to meet challenges head-on. As a result, the competitive landscape is changing, which will continue to change how communications solutions are designed, supported, positioned and deployed.

IntelliCom Analytics (News - Alert) is one company with a close pulse on the industry, watching the transformation of technologies. To get a better idea of how this key industry player views the market, TMC invited Frank Stinson (News - Alert), Partner and Senior Analyst at IntelliCom Analytics into the newsroom at ITEXPO in Miami.

As someone who watches and analyzes trends in the greater marketplace, TMCnet was curious as to Stinson’s observation of top trends at the show. “My focus is in the unified communication and collaboration space so there are a couple trends that are almost disruptive to the traditional role of IT,” shared Stinson. “I think they pose some challenges for your traditional audience here. One of them is around a consumerization of IT. The power that the user has in their hand with their smartphone is creating new demands for IT in terms of how they have to manage it and how they have to empower the individual user.”

Even with the advancements that are focused on meeting the needs of the user and the corporate environment, there are still a number of challenges to overcome in the market. The question is whether or not positive change will happen in a short amount of time. “I think it is only going to accelerate because the user only has so much capability they can get on their own. When you have an organization that has no IT infrastructure and they start to look at apps available in the cloud, it really changes the game in terms of the upfront investment that is needed to get off the ground.”
