Varonis Warns DeleteMe Mobile App Not Exactly Best Option for Businesses

By Colleen Lynch, TMCnet Contributor

DeleteMe Mobile is a service app from online privacy company Abine, which has now finally hit the market.

The app works with iPhones, iPads and soon will work with Android (News - Alert) devices, but Varonis Systems issued a warning along with the product’s arrival announcement: the app is not designed to work for businesses or in the professional sphere – only to remove data for personal use.

“Businesses need to ensure that their content is protected and managed efficiently, without having to worry that their data is falling into the wrong hands,” said David Gibson.

The device is meant to be used for Internet users that want to request the removal of personally identifying information from Internet-accessible databases.

“The importance of data as an asset class has been steadily increasing, as organizations realize the inherent value that it offers--both to themselves, to third parties, and to the cybercriminals who are constantly seeking to monetize information.”

The app costs around $100 a year, which is about 20 percent cheaper than equivalent services that are based on the Web.

Gibson was sure to note, “No parallel service exists for organizations.”

The DeleteMe Mobile app was created in response to the need for an easy way to remove an organization’s data once it has leaked out on to the Internet. Data is incredibly at-risk once it has been loaded onto the Internet, so deletion services are becoming necessary at this point.

“Lobbying for the deletion of information that relates to a business is a far more difficult task than for an individual. As we have said many times before, once data is created, it has a habit of replicating itself--making the task of controlling that data all the more difficult,” Gibson explained.

Varonis hopes users will know this before businesses try to implement the app, because of its low cost. DeleteMe is optimized for individual users who want their private information back from ad services, which is happening more than most are aware.

“IT professionals need to ensure that only the right users have access to the right data at all times from all devices, that all data use is monitored, and abuse is flagged,” Gibson added. “Taking a strong governance approach to data can help to ensure that valuable information cannot find its way to third parties on the Internet in the first place.”
