Varonis welcomes arrival of DeleteMe Mobile - but warns there is not equivalent Internet data removal service for businesses

Jan 28, 2013 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Commenting on the arrival of the DeleteMe Mobile service app for iPhones, iPads and, shortly, Android devices, Varonis Systems says that the fact that there is demand for this type of Internet deletion service highlights the fact that data - once loaded on to the Internet - has a nasty habit of replicating itself.

David Gibson, the data governance specialist's vice president of strategy, says that Abine's DeleteMe Mobile will be a useful tool for those Internet users that want to request the removal of personally identifying information from Internet-accessible databases.

"Pricing in at around $100 a year, the app-driven service is about 20 percent cheaper than the equivalent web-based service, but it's interesting to note that no parallel service exists for organisations," he said.

"The reason for this, of course, is that lobbying for the deletion of information that relates to a business is a far more difficult task than for an individual. As we have said many times before, once data is created, it has a habit of replicating itself - making the task of controlling that data all the more difficult," he added.

"The importance of data as an asset class has been steadily increasing, as organisations realise the inherent value that it offers - both to themselves, to third parties, and to the cybercriminals who are constantly seeking to monetise information." "Against this backdrop, IT professionals need to ensure that only the right users have access to the right data at all times from all devices, that all data use is monitored, and abuse is flagged. Taking a strong governance approach to data can help to ensure that valuable information cannot find its way to third parties on the Internet in the first place," he said.

"The fact is that there is no easy way of removing an organisation's data once it has leaked out on to the Internet. Businesses need to ensure that their content is protected and managed efficiently, without having to worry that their data is falling into the wrong hands," he added.
