Apple Studies Why Consumers Choose Android Over iPhone

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

If you don't have an iPhone, there may be a number of reasons for it. You may not be able to afford one, for starters. You may not like the look of them. You may have received another phone for a gift and didn't want to hurt the giver's feelings. But chances are your reasons are more practical.

Apple (News - Alert) wants to know why you don't have an iPhone, so the company recently undertook a study to find out why users choose phones running on Google's Android platform instead of its own flagship smartphone device.

According to research by Apple, the number one reason people chose Android (News - Alert) over iPhone before 2011 was because the Android phone was available on their carrier, Business Insider reported.

This news may have Apple kicking itself over its initial exclusive partnership with AT&T. Had the iPhone been available to customers on other carriers from the outset, Apple may have completely dominated the smartphone marketplace, creating new customers in the form of Verizon, T-Mobile (News - Alert) and Sprint subscribers who didn't wish to switch carriers.

Apple may have suspected this soon after its exclusive launch with AT&T. According to industry rumors, Apple (a notoriously secretive company) renegotiated with AT&T when it introduced the iPad, allowing Apple to offer the iPhone to Verizon subscribers in 2011.

Other reasons consumers had for choosing Android over iPhone include trust in the Google (News - Alert) brand, preference for the Android market, the larger screens on some Android devices and better integration with Google services such as Gmail and Google Maps.
