Staples President Confirms 'Up to Six' New Kindle Fire Tablets

By Tanya Palta, TMCnet Contributing Writer

It is no secret that Amazon.com (News - Alert) seeks to broaden their mobile platform and go beyond the e-reader market. And while the first generation of Kindle Fire wasn’t a runaway success and had its share of critics, it did manage to carve a place for itself in a market dominated by the iPad and the Samsung (News - Alert) Galaxy tab. For months the technology grapevine is abuzz about the impending rumored Amazon Kindle Fire tablets and now some new information is available on the rumored device.

According to Demos Parneros, president of U.S. Retail for Staples (News - Alert) Inc, which sells the Fire, Amazon has plans to unveil up to five or six tablet SKUs, or stock-keeping units in the coming months. Parneros further shed some light on the entire matter and confirmed that the tablets will be of different sizes, and there will also be a 10-inch model. A 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire is also rumored to be in the pipeline, however, Parneros didn’t confirm this. As expected, no official word has emerged from Amazon and they are staying mum on the whole matter.

Amazon is emerging as an aggressive player in the tablet market and this is mainly because it can help them to further push their digital content to their 100 million customer base. "You're seeing the Apple (News - Alert) play book recreated by everyone else who wants to play in the mobile device ecosystem. Amazon is the latest entrant," said Niccolo de Masi, chief executive of Glu Mobile Inc, which develops mobile games for the Fire."The Kindle Fire is off to a great start," he added. "We will be supporting all new devices that have promise. They are trying to build on the foundations they have."

"Amazon will keep working on this path of providing mobile devices and tablet devices," said Giordano Contestabile, an executive at PopCap, a unit of Electronic Arts whose games include: Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled and Peggle on the Fire. "We're all waiting," he added.
