Will the Next-Gen Kindle Fire Ever Leave Rumor Realm?

By Colleen Lynch, TMCnet Contributor

Another information leak concerning the next generation of Amazon’s Kindle Fire hit the Web today, adding to the already overload of information available about the yet-to-be-announced tablet.

That’s right, the reportedly higher-resolution Kindle Fire has not even been officially confirmed yet by Amazon, but already we know, or at least know the rumors of, the following:

·         The new Kindle Fire will be easier to hold and look at

·         The device will launch late in the third quarter

·         The display will be 1280x800, much bigger than the 1024x600 model out now

·         The tablet’s aspect ratio will change from 10:6 to 16:10

·         The new display will have 216 pixels per inch

·         The next-gen Kindle Fire will be thinner

·         The plastic external chassis will be replaced by a metal case

Assuming these rumors are all true, the new Kindle Fire can comfortably be called the worst-kept secret in technology. This past Sunday AllThingsD added fuel to the fire (pun very intended) by reporting that Amazon was working on a higher-resolution Kindle Fire that would be lighter than the current model.

Newer apparently means lighter and thinner, but Amazon isn’t shying away from increases. The updates to the Kindle Fire include a 67 percent increase in total pixel density, a resolution increase set to put the Fire in direct competition with Google’s (News - Alert) Nexus 7.

The two devices will share other similarities, including a 7-inch display, and both have release dates in or around this summer, so they will be attacking the same market at roughly the same time.

The Nexus 7 has largely been described as the best 7-inch tablet available, but according to “sources familiar with Amazon’s plans,” the Kindle Fire will pose a fairly strong challenge to this title.

The Nexus 7 is out this July and already there are rumors that a 7-inch iPad could be expected from Google this fall, so Amazon is right to step up their game, and quick. Though the device resides in rumor-ville as of yet, the next generation Kindle Fire just may come into the clear soon, and the similarities—and more importantly differences—it offers will be out in the open for all to see, judge or acclaim.
