Google Nexus Tablet Confirmed: $250, Tegra 3 CPU, 7-Inch Screen

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Since late last week, rumors about the possibility of a Google (News - Alert) Nexus tablet have gotten more definitive, claiming a release date at the end of the month, a $250 price point and a seven-inch screen. Well, it would appear those rumors were right on every count.

The latest reports have confirmed these rumors by way of an Asus representative, who wishes to remain anonymous and said simply “it will be awesome.”

There has been anticipation that Google would release its own tablet for some time, now, after the success of Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Then, last month, the Nexus tablet turned up on a benchmarking site called Rightware. From that, we got what are likely to be the unit’s specs, namely a quad-core NVidia Tegra 3 processor, as well as the fact that the device will run Android (News - Alert) 4.1, nicknamed “Jelly Bean.”

It’s been assumed that Asus would manufacture the tablet since the hardware manufacturer’s MeMo 370T tablet, announced in January, was never mentioned again, resulting in rumors that it would instead become Google’s first Nexus tablet. The tablet was planned to be a seven-inch, Tegra 3-equipped device with a planned price tag (News - Alert) of $250.

Meanwhile, Nvidia announced a reference design for sub-$200 quad-core tablets.

Just as Apple is likely announcing iOS 6 at its Worldwide Developer’s Conference, Google is probably going to unveil Jelly Bean running on the Nexus tablet at its Google IO developers conference on June 27. The Nexus tablet will likely appeal to a broader audience than the Kindle Fire since it will have full access to the Google Play app market while running the latest version of Android with no manufacturer modifications.

But really, what everybody wants to know is: Will a Google Nexus tablet be popular enough to compete with the iPad? Hard to say. At $250, one could buy two Nexus tablets for the price of one iPad, but Apple (News - Alert) does have a history of success, particularly with the iPad and a devoted fan base, so it’s anyone’s guess right now.
