WWDC 2012 Begins: What We Know and What We Don't

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

It’s that time of the year again – the 2012 Apple (News - Alert) Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) at the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco.

This is the event so looked forward to in the tech industry, some people are willing to change their names just to get in the door. And what does the world have to look forward to from Apple CEO Tim Cook as he takes the stage today? That’s a bit unsure at this point in time.

For one thing, Cook will definitely unveil the sixth version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS. Rumors had been flying around for a while about this, but it was confirmed on Friday that we’ll get to see what’s in store for future iPhones and iPads, at least software-wise. As for what new features iOS 6 will bring to the table, it seems likely that Cook will unveil Facebook (News - Alert) integration, an updated and improved version of the Safari browser and voice recognition software Siri as well as Apple’s 3D maps app to replace Google (News - Alert) Maps.

Otherwise, it’s hard to say how iOS 6 will change. Last year saw iOS 5 bring some fairly useful updates to the OS’s basic operation – the new notification bar, for example. It doesn’t seem like iOS could get any more streamlined at this point as it seems to have evolved to its best point, so maybe core updates are going to be few and far between from now on.

On the desktop side, Cook should be unveiling Mac OS X Mountain Lion along with the release date for the new OS. Will Cook show us a peak of the newest lineup of Macs, as well? Again, it’s hard to say but it’s not impossible that we might get a look at some 2012 MacBook Pros and iMacs. At the very least, we already know that they’re going to sport Ivy Bridge processors.

I guess we’ll just have to wait. Fortunately, it won’t be a long one.
