High-Tech Firms Banding Together to Wipe Out Phishing Emails

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Along with all the really positive things that have come with the explosion of the Internet, every once in a while we run across something really bad. The Internet has been responsible for a rise in some of the most insidious scams around. These scams are not only dangerous because of the new and inventive ways they can get to you, but because of the sheer scale of people they can now reach.

There may be some good news coming around the corner for potential scam victims, with an emphasis being put on the email scam commonly known as Phishing. Google, Facebook (News - Alert) and several other big time high-tech companies have decided to work together in order to set up a system that would all but kill the ability to commit the Phishing scam. It is no surprise that companies like Facebook are looking to tackle this head on. The social networking giant has had its fair share of security breaches that have caused its users headaches.

The problem for companies like Facebook is that when a scammer manages to get past their security, the site takes the brunt of the blame. Phishing actually takes advantage of those email users who trust that when they receive an email that says it is from their bank, it is actually from their bank. The email tricks the user into responding with their password or other personal information.

In order to stop this, 15 different tech and financial firms are banding together to create a system that would validate emails and weed out those that are clearly Phishing. The system is being called the Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance or DMARC. In addition to being able to determine when an email is clearly misrepresenting itself, DMARC will also fire off an alert to the company the Phishing scammers are attempting to pretend to be.

Work on the DMARC project started more than a year ago but the system has hit a bit of a benchmark today. Starting now, companies that were not involved in building the system itself can sign up to be protected.
