Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies' Website for Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Receives 2017 Horizon Interactive Award
An emergency room doctor meets a patient for the first time who claims a
need for opioid medications. A pharmacist notices a consumer who seems
to frequently refill the same opioid prescription. Whether it's a
licensed healthcare professional in a large city, a suburban area or in
a rural community, there's a short timeframe for them to be able to
answer the same question - is this patient's request for controlled
medication legitimate or is it related to addiction?
The answer is at the core of the Colorado Department of Regulatory
Agencies' (DORA) Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). The PDMP
helps licensed healthcare prescribers and dispensers make more informed
decisions before prescribing or dispensing controlled substances to
patients. DORA's PDMP website
serves as a critical "front door" for licensed healthcare prescribers
and dispensers to access this powerful tool, and was selected as a 2017
Horizon Interactive Award recipient.
The Horizon
Interactive Awards (HIA) are among the most prestigious awards in
the field of interactive and creative media. They recognize the best web
sites, web site design, interactive, videos, online advertising, print
media and mobile applications. The 2017 competition attracted entries
from across the United States and more than 16 countries. A volunteer
panel of industry professionals spanning multimedia, graphic design
advertising and marketing reviewed over 1,000 entries. The website for
DORA's PDMP was awarded due to its outstanding achievement in
interactive media production.
Although the PDMP system does what it's intended to do - provide
licensed healthcare prescribers and dispensers with a critical tool to
help reduce prescription drug misuse and abuse - getting to the PDMP
system wasn't a simple process. The PDMP, which is managed by the
Division of Professions and Occupations at DORA, needed a more
user-friendly entryway where users could easily register, log in to
their accounts and access additional key resources and information.
"User feedback had indicated the system was difficult to navigate,
contained too much content and had a coplicated login that was
discouraging professionals from creating accounts," explained Ronne
Hines, Director for the Division of Professions and Occupations at DORA.
"We're honored that we won a Horizon Interactive Award for the redesign.
It validates that our website is on the right track in educating
prescribers, pharmacists and consumers about the PDMP's benefits."
DORA engaged the services of Colorado Interactive (CI), the Statewide
Internet Portal Authority (SIPA) and Denver digital agency Elevated
Third to enhance the user experience. CI provides digital government
services to state agencies, local governments and educational entities
through a contract with SIPA - the official internet portal connecting
the public with Colorado government. The partnership's mission allows
government leaders to focus on delivering on-demand, digital government
solutions without requests for proposals or the use of tax
appropriations. The CI/SIPA partnership has benefited more than 40
state-department programs.
DORA's PDMP website also supports the initiatives of the Colorado
Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention. This statewide,
interagency network was formed under the Colorado Plan to Reduce
Prescription Drug Abuse in 2013.
"I'm proud that our technology is being utilized to help give
professionals not only the information they need, but when they need it,
to address the crisis," said CI's President and General Manager, Fred
Sargeson.
In addition to four of its government partners receiving awards, CI was
named one of HIA's 2017 Distinguished Agencies.
