Cobham Wireless Demos LTE-A and NFV-based Testing Solutions

The part of Cobham that was formerly Aeroflex is at Mobile World Congress this week demonstrating its 4G LTE (News - Alert)-A test solution, network functions virtualization validation, and new algorithms for a 5G air interface.

Cobham is best known as a British aerospace and defense supplier. Its new wireless business sells an array of microelectronics, video-related products, and wireless solutions, including test and measurement gear. Its test portfolio includes virtual test solutions for SDN deployments that Aeroflex got via its February 2014 acquisition of Shenick (News - Alert) Network Systems. As for Cobham, it bought Aeroflex in May for $920 million.

The TM500 network tester products that Cobham Wireless is showing this week in Barcelona help mobile operators more quickly deploy heterogeneous wireless networks, according to the company.

“The TM500 network tester can emulate and validate realistic CoMP usage scenarios in both uplink and downlink,” said Nicola Logli, product manager at Cobham Wireless. “It enables operators and vendors to perform lab and field trials incorporating realistic performance tests for this powerful new LTE-A feature. This helps them maximize throughput in their HetNet deployments, and improve user experience under challenging cell edge and interference conditions.”

In the Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) demonstration, the company will show how the TM500 can verify the performance of a multi-RAT network using LTE and WCDMA, with an array of user SIM cards connected to multiple test user equipment or mobile devices.

“In a network the Real USIM Array could be located remotely from both the TM500 and the network – anywhere in the world with Internet access,” said Hayk Manukyan, head of the advanced market solutions department at Cobham Wireless. “This opens up some very flexible options for validating the real-life behavior of operators’ networks under high levels of traffic and stress.”

On the NFV front, Cobham Wireless is showing its TeraVM solution working to validate the performance of various NFV infrastructure and VNF instances including security vulnerability assessment.

Meanwhile, the company is working with Razieh Razavi at Mobile World Congress to show its 5G air interface algorithms in action.
