Ericsson Set to Break its Own HSPA World Record
By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor
Ericsson has announced it is all set to break its own HSPA world record. The company will demonstrate HSPA multi-carrier MIMO technology, providing peak downlink data rates of 56Mbps, at the CTIA (News - Alert) Wireless exhibition.
Ericsson sees this demonstration as another step for HSPA Evolution, and believes this will further enhance the mobile broadband experience. Higher data rates mean that users get an instantaneous connection and they can browse at a fast speed even if a number of users are online at the same time.
A combination of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and multi-carrier HSPA technology is behind this increase in speed. Higher peak data rates and increased spectral efficiency enabled by MIMO results in higher network capacity for the customers.
At CTIA, Ericsson (News - Alert) will carry out the demonstrations with a concept-design version of an Ericsson HSPA-enabled mobile-broadband router. Officials explain that this router can be used anywhere broadband access is needed. The device shares a mobile-broadband connection between multiple consumers and provides efficient use of the high-speed broadband connection.
“Ericsson's continued HSPA Evolution leadership enables higher data rates, increased network capacity and low network costs,” said Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson, Ulf Ewaldsson.
He noted that this CTIA demonstration combining MIMO and multi-carrier technology shows the strong potential of further HSPA enhancements. Operators using Ericsson’s network equipment can offer attractive mobile-broadband services to their customers, today and in future.
HSPA multi-carrier technology with MIMO is currently being standardized. The technology is scheduled for commercial deployment in 2010.
Ericsson has also announced its most advanced mobile broadband module, designed to provide a richer and cost-effective Internet experience for all. Scheduled for launch in June 2009, Ericsson's F3607gw mobile-broadband module for HSPA/GPRS/EDGE networks will provide enhanced functionality and convenience through reduced power consumption, prolonged battery life and an increased level of integration.
