Internet Telephony� magazine would like to congratulate the winners of
the 2000 Internet Telephony Product of the Year award. It's no easy task
selecting appropriate companies for this honor, and the job seems to get
more difficult with each passing year. While there are a number of
companies who have appeared on our annual list in the past, there are a
tremendous number of newcomers -- global giants and micro-startups alike.
But a single thread binds all of these companies together, and that is
their commitment to quality, constant innovation, and their dedication to
keeping this industry moving forward.
It's rather incredible to note that an industry as young as ours has
advanced so far into the mainstream in such a short time. When two years
ago we were touting the state-of-the-art of a two-line VoIP gateway board,
this year's list includes services such as dialpad.com who claim over 11
million registered users; gateways and routers that can achieve throughput
in the terabit range; and IP-based switches that are classified as Class 5
switch replacements. Not bad for two years of hard work.
However, this industry is constantly in flux. By the time this list
"hits the newsstands" some of these companies may very well be
acquired. Some of these companies may shift their focus to other areas of
development. As such it's important to see this list for what it is, a
starting place for those of you who are interested in purchasing this
technology for use in your own undertakings. For example, there are
certainly more than four companies involved in the IP telephony billing
market. However the four vendors listed here are a great place to begin
your search for the solution that will ultimately serve to fulfill your
particular needs. I remind everyone to do their homework, research these
companies thoroughly, follow up with phone calls and e-mails, and one
important point that often gets overlooked: Check out those customer
references!
