InGate: WebRTC is Work in Progress

InGate is probably best known as a leader in designing and developing Sessions Border Controller (SBC) and firewall technology, carrying with it the goal offer everyone the opportunity for global person-to-person real-time communication. One of the primary technologies in the space that can provide this type of real-time communication is WebRTC, but questions still loom and until all players can create a standard this can prove a real hurdle.

Recently, Ingate’s CEO Karl Stahl caught up with TMCnet’s Group Editorial Director Erik Linask (News - Alert) to discuss WebRTC standards, adoption and ITEXPO.

When asked about WebRTC adoption, Stahl remarked about the lack of standards in the space. He stated, “Standards take time and there is also an ongoing delaying with the major browser vendors.” Major players like Apple and Microsoft (News - Alert) are integral in the creation of a standard.

He notes the first real bump in WebRTC’s road will be developing a standard, although many in the space feel we have turned a proverbial corner, standards are needed to bring about widespread adoption and usage.

Many companies today are implementing click-to-call on their websites, but as Stahl notes it must really work in default browsers. He goes on to say that he believes 2015 will prove to be a big year for adoption.

InGate is making great efforts in the space to drive adoption. It created a gateway to integrate WebRTC and SIP, Stahl notes that “to connect globally…and maintain the features you have to go via SIP.” Additionally, the Q-turn is putting the turn server in the firewall, “WebRTc simply doesn’t work” in the enterprise as it can’t get through the firewall but InGate can all for proper “penetration of the firewall.”

The hype for WebRTC is real, and as more and more key players involve themselves in the mix, the more adoption should pick up. Much like building a hous there must be a solid foundation to build off, and standards provide that.
