SIP-Based Communications Shine in Comparison with TDM

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Despite the rise and subsequent dominance of VoIP phone services, there remains an ongoing debate in the telecommunications industry over whether SIP-based communications are truly better than TDM-based communications.

While the ultimate answer may be based on the needs of the customer, there are clearly arguable reasons why SIP-based communications are superior when compared with TDM. These reasons -- which basically boil down to new dfeatures and capabilities -- are the key to the growing demand for SIP-based communications services.

Session Internet Protocol (SIP) is a siganalling protocol that allows for truly integrated communications solutions – it delivers more feature-rich services at rates that are typically less than traditional TDM services. In addition, SIP provides versatility that allows customers to buy only what they need instead of just what the carrier offers.

In the corporate environment, TDM played an important, and reliable, role for many years. With the technologies available today, however, SIP just makes more sense. This technology – also known as VoIP – allows voice calls to be completed over the IP network for far less money than traditional TDM phone service.

There are a number of benefits SIP delivers to the organization, including the ability to move a phone extension from one office to another simply by moving the phone to a new jack. The person for whom the calls are intended automatically receives the calls, regardless of where or when the phone has been moved.

SIP also allows an organization to support one network instead of two. VoIP – or SIP – rides on the data network and therefore can all be managed by the IT department. Voice acts as an application running over the network, eliminating the need for dedicated personal to attend to traditional telecom systems.

The cost savings of SIP are obvious, yet companies often need reassurance on its reliability before they commit to SIP technology, and the treptidation is understandable considering they have customers to serve, and a reputation and brand to protect. Quality communications has to be guaranteed with SIP – otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to make the change. SIP-based communications from providers such as PowerNet Global deliver the high quality service necessary to get the job done.

To take it one step further, SIP delivers features and fucntionality that TDM simply cannot. For example call center agents can leverage the technology to allow account information to pop up on their computer screens based on the caller ID; calls can be placed by simply clicking on the phone number within an application; and there are powerful unified communications features such as “presence,” which is the ability to view the availability status of other users on the network, making it fast and easy to determine who is available to take a call.

PowerNet Global (News - Alert) offers several SIP packages that are sure to accommodate all customer needs. PowerNet Global's feature-rich SIP solutions leverage VoIP and Internet Access, allowing the customer to decide whether to use their own Internet Access or take advantage of access provided by PowerNet Global.

By delivering all communications through one connection, PowerNet Global enables customers to leverage an affordable voice and data solution that provides all of the telecom advantages necessary to thrive in today’s markets.
