Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio System Revealed as Next-Gen Voice Infrastructure with Green Benefits

By Jaclyn Allard, TMCnet Copy Editor

Alcatel-Lucent’s (News - Alert) new motto should be “Simple, functional, green transformation for communications.” Alcatel-Lucent recently revealed the newest addition to its comprehensive access and border control portfolio, the 5060 IBC-4 (IP Border Controller-4). The first integrated SBC solution from Alcatel-Lucent provides service providers the security to protect consumers and businesses from network breaches such as identity theft, information leaks and downtime due to cyber attacks. However, it’s the 5060 IBC-4’s smaller size, as well as Alcatel-Lucent’s newest Green undertaking in the mobile realm that has consumers taking a second, third and fourth look at the simple, functional and green communication services provided by Alcatel-Lucent.

Alcatel-Lucent, a provider of a broad range of communications services, has unveiled a breakthrough in mobile and broadband infrastructure called, lightRadio system. Dramatically reduced technical complexity and contained power consumption in the face of sharp traffic growth has become possible, resulting from Alcatel-Lucent’s successful effort to shrink and simplify base stations and massive cell site towers.

lightRadio represents a new architecture where the base station is broken into its component elements, and then distributed into both the antenna and throughout a cloud-like network. lightRadio also shrinks today’s clutter of antennas serving 2G, 3G, and LTE systems into a single Bell Labs (News - Alert)-pioneered antenna to be mounted on poles, buildings, etc., which provides power and a broadband connection.

Below are some of the additional benefits included in the lightRadio system:

•         Shrinks the carbon footprint of mobile networks by over 50 percent

•         Reduces the Total-Cost-of-Ownership of mobile operators by up to 50 percent

•         Improves end user services by increasing bandwidth per user

“The day has finally come when service providers need to take a serious look at the road ahead in terms of technology and their economic models,” said Phil Marshall (News - Alert) of Tolaga Research. “To survive and thrive, service providers must evolve network designs, embrace small cell sites and all-IP architectures and replace traditional network designs with flexible cloud-like architectures that can truly meet the data demands of the future.”

Whether it’s an integrated SBC option or a new mobile and broadband infrastructure, Alcatel-Lucent has the voice of the customer in mind and upholds simple, functional, green transformation. Alcatel-Lucent is looking to continue its high quality of experience for service providers, who in turn want to ensure a high quality of experience for their customers.
