HP MediaSmart Home Server Introduced for PCs and Macs

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

HP, a global technology company, has introduced HP MediaSmart Server ex485/ex487, a home server that can be used with both Windows and Mac computers.

The new home server is based on the Microsoft Windows Home Server platform, and serves as a central repository for automatically backing up and accessing digital music, videos, photos and documents from multiple computers on a wired or wireless home network.

HP MediaSmart Server ex485/ex487 has the ability to automatically organize files across all PCs, stream media across a home network and the Internet, and publish photos to selected social networking and photo sharing sites.

Today, a large number of households have both Windows and Mac computers containing hundreds and sometimes thousands of scattered media files and documents, noted Jason Zajac, vice president of strategy, Worldwide Attach Group, HP. Because their HP MediaSmart Server protects, stores and organizes this content from anywhere on a network, consumers can access and share it any place they are connected.

According to Charlie Kindel, general manager, Windows Server Solutions, Microsoft (News - Alert), HP’s innovation on the Windows Home Server platform has given consumers even more options to enjoy and protect their precious memories and valuable data.

HP is confident of the success of their new launch and believes consumers will find the new MediaSmart Server as one of the most exciting computing products for the home.

Commenting on the new release, Danielle Levitas, group vice president, Consumer, Broadband and Digital Marketplace, IDC said that the customers are always searching for the right mix of features and ease-of-use when choosing digital home products.

Levitas explained that HP’s home server has compelling features for Mac and PC users and offers a great customer experience that helps simplify the complexity of the connected home.

“This unique offering will help expand the home server market,” he added.

HP was recently in news when NTT DOCOMO, a Japanese mobile communications company migrated their 54 million customers to the HP OpenCall Media Platform to enhance the quality of its voice-activated services.
